Savita. Ar dheis dé go raibh a hanam.

It beggars belief that in the year 2012 a woman was left to die an agonising death because we are a "catholic" country. Imagine being in so much pain that you repeatedly asked for a doctor to terminate a pregnancy that nature was in the throes of terminating and being refused.

At 17 weeks pregnant I can imagine how precious Savita's baby was to her. So many plans and dreams to be made, delight at the first little flutters of life in the womb and excitement at a new little addition to the family. The heartbreak then of an impending miscarriage and despite pleas to help nature run its course there was point blank refusal. How would you feel if it was your mother, daughter, sister, niece or friend lying there begging for help? It doesn't bear thinking about.

So this great little country that we live in is under the scrutiny of the world today. It's time for us to make a stand and let it be known that Ireland is changing. No longer should the Catholic Church be allowed determine whether a woman can live or die. Write to your local representatives and let it be known that you are not happy and things have got to change or are we going to wait for more women to die in this barbaric manner?

I am so sad that Savita will never get to experience the joys that motherhood brings, all of that was cruelly snatched away from her. No baby cuddles and sloppy toddler kisses to enjoy. No school reports and shouts from the sideline of a soccer pitch. Let her death not be in vain.

  1. Sitting here, reading your post crying. I can't bare thinking about the emotional, physical pain she and her family went through.
I am so angry that doctors, medical staff left this poor mother died an attrocous way. How can this happened in this day and age. It is time to wake up, become accountable and take responsabilities

  3. Its maddening that this country constantly votes NO to abortion.. The catholic church's reign over people is dwindling and I hope future generations do what is right for this country

    1. Cannot fathom it! In a farmyard a cow would be saved but not a woman. Unreal.

  6. It is so horrific Paula. I still feel as sick as I did this morning when I read the article. Irish healthcare in general is an atrocity, but this is inexcusable. Shame on those doctors. Shame on the Catholic church. Shame on Ireland.

  7. It's awful. It makes me so angry. And yet when I said so on Twitter I got lots of replies saying 'don't blame the Church, blame the government'. I don't know enough to get into rows with people, but surely this is a Catholic law? What do Catholic people think?

    1. Becky we are all just outraged. The Catholic Church have had too much power over schools, hospitals and the government for far too long. There should be a clear separation between church and state but until we have some courageous people in government that will not happen.

  9. I was so sad and so mad all week, struggled to find words for what I felt.
Hopefully this will never happen to another woman in an Irish hospital.
